Jan Gaunt –
This is a really clever idea. The book is beautifully presented with ribbon closure. Picking it up is like receiving a bouquet. It is more of a kit than a book though, as once completed the book is of no further use.
It takes time to push out pieces though they are well cut. You do need to keep track of which piece is which, so if you push out a lot at once, keep the pages so you can match sizes. I didn’t trim off the little remaining nubs of paper, and found that once the petals and leaves were shaped, most of these disappeared of their own accord. The pages are thick, and coloured both sides with lovely variegation, adding to the realism of the flora. I found it easier to cut the pages out of the book before pressing out the shape.
For me, the stems were trickiest. I found it best to cut off the little corner, start to roll a little, glue, then did the rest once dry. I tried to use a hot glue gun, but my glue would not adhere to the petals. I tried a glue stick but this wasn’t detailed enough. In the end, I used PVA applied with a cocktail stick for accuracy.
I was delighted with the finished bouquet, which would easily split into 2 or 3 smaller bouquets for gifting (labels included).
If you’ve made any of Jo Lochead’s Felt Flowers (also by D&C), these are of similar construction so the techniques will be familiar.
