All About Boucle

Bouclé (from the French for “loop” and pronounced boo-clay) is a textured fabric known for its distinctive curls and loops. It has an inviting, tactile quality—soft, slightly spongy, and full of character. This technique can be used on wool, synthetics, cotton and even linen but most of our bouclé fabrics are polyester-based, which gives them resilience and easy care, making them ideal for cosy jackets, over-layer (live the courage top), and our gorgeous Bramble Bear, Though it looks luxurious, bouclé is surprisingly forgiving once you get to know it, the bouncy texture eats up your stitches so even the wobbliest stitcher handle it!

How to Wash & Store

  • Bouclé is best treated gently to preserve its distinctive texture. Machine washing is often possible, especially for polyester blends, but use a cool, delicate cycle and a mild detergent.
  • Turn your garment inside out and consider placing it in a mesh laundry bag to protect the loops from snagging.
  • Avoid overloading the machine—bouclé benefits from a bit of space to swish about. Wash at 30 degrees or on a gentle, cool setting to maintain its softness and shape.
  • We recommend air-drying bouclé garments flat or on a hanger to avoid distorting the shape. Don’t tumble dry, as the heat and agitation can flatten the texture and cause pilling.
  • If needed, gently steam or iron on the reverse side with a pressing cloth—bouclé doesn’t love direct heat, so keep the iron low and avoid heavy pressure.

Bouclé can be a delight to sew with the right approach. Polyester or wool Boucle doesn’t really fray, so you can cut down on stitching time and choose a raw hem. Because Bouclé is so squishy, many of our customers have said they enjoy hand sewing it, and it handles the same as wool felt!

Needle
Size 80/12 or 90/14 is ideal for our Boucle

Thread
A good-quality, strong polyester thread to match the resilience of the fabric.

Interfacing
Finish your edges with a zigzag stitch, pinking shears, or an overlocker if necessary!

Accept The Stretch:
Boucle is bouncy and has a little give compared to other woven fabrics. Try not to pull it out of shape, or if you are making soft toys, be careful not to overfill it.

Press With Care:
If needed, gently steam or iron on the reverse side with a pressing cloth—bouclé doesn’t love direct heat, so keep the iron low and avoid heavy pressure.

Best Foot Forward:
Using a walking foot will make the density easier to work with in your  sewing machine.
